Rivka Teyer (née Shumowitz), a teacher and painter, is Izhak’s daughter. From her early childhood she dreamed of publishing her parents’ story. Together with her husband, Israel, she has fulfilled her wish.
For seven years, the two worked together. Israel relates, how, at family picnics, Rivka would sit alone with her father under a shady tree, asking him numerous questions, gradually unfolding the family’s story of survival.
The Hebrew version was published in 1982, and since that time Rivka has
lectured to elementary and high school pupils, always arousing great interest and emotion amongst the children.
Rivka and Israel have visited Poland many times, and have been entertained by Gosk (the son) and his family. The courtyard and pigsty remain the same as they were during the war. In recent years, the place has become a veritable tourist attraction, with many people from all over the world visiting Gosk and his wife.
Israel, Rivka’s husband, is an accountant and painter. As a result of his visits to Poland, he started to create paintings depicting Jewish life in Eastern Europe before World War II, including illustrations for the Shumowitz story.
Some of Israel’s paintings appear in the final pages of the book.
Israel Teyer - 1942
Since he arrived in Israel from Russia in1949, Israel Teyer has followed his passion for art. At his father's side, he was taught as a child to understand perspectives in drawings, and, from an early age, he studied under Abba Fenikel, a renown artist famous for his sketches, drawings and wood-blocks. Later at the National University, he practiced with Parvis, the court artist for the Shah of Iran. For the last five years, Mr. Teyer has attended classes under the tutorage of Shaike Klainmann, famous for his water-colors and oils, and with Gad Ulman in Jaffa.
Travels to many parts of the world have influenced the vision and experiences Israel Teyer brings to his works. Visiting Poland brought recollections of his years before the Second World War, while viewing works of Impressionist artists brought new insight to his own paintings.
